Africa-Press – Malawi. Lilongwe First Grade Magistrate’s Court on Friday, October 21,2022 sentenced two men to three years in prison each for ransacking a butchery shop during the unauthorized July 20, 2022 demonstrations, which were organized by the Human Rights Ambassadors (HRA).
The two, Hassan Anold, aged 21 and Justin Kabango, 20, were found guilty on Friday October 20,2022 of breaking into a building and committing a felony therein.
State Prosecutor Sergeant Obedi Kagwa told the court that the pair broke into a butchery shop in Area 36 and went away with two deep freezers and a meat cutting machine, all valued at over MK3 million.
When they appeared in court, the duo pleaded not guilty and the State paraded four witnesses to prove its case. The State asked the court to hand out a stiffer punishment to the accused saying the fridges were not recovered and it was a huge loss to the victim.
Passing his sentence, First Grade Magistrate Chakaka Nyirenda said what the two did was not only barbaric but also retrogressive in nature hence the need to deal them a harsh sentence.
Nyirenda went on convicting and sentencing the two convicts each to three years imprisonment with hard labour to deter would-be criminals. Anold comes from Mapando Village Traditional Authority (T/A) Nankumba in Mangochi while Kabango hails from Lasani Village (T/A) Kachere in Dedza.
