Africa-Press – Malawi. Leader of Opposition in Parliament Kondwani Nankhumwa on Friday, December 16, 2022 accused Speaker and Leader of the House Gotani Hara and Richard Chimwendo Banda respectively for curtailing unfinished House business.
The accusations comes as Friday’s House Business was supposed to start with the Banking bill, which is at committee stage. Nankhumwa told the news conference outside Parliament that the opposition bench was not happy the house leadership conduct.
The press conference followed the Speaker Gotani Hara’s controversial adjournment ‘sine die’ of the 7th Meeting is the 49th Session of Parliament before business was thoroughly concluded.
This was a calculated move after Chimwendo Banda had moved a motion to curtail proceedings sine die after the government side’s proposal that the House debates the Press Reconstruction Bill was defeated.
Nankhumwa, who was accompanied by scores of DPP, UDF, UTM and Independent MPs condemned the action by the Speaker, saying “today is a sad day for our democracy”.
Nankhumwa said the Speaker, the Leader of House and the entire government side had done a great disservice to the people of Malawi for choosing politics above the larger interests of the nation.
“After sensing that the government side did not have enough numbers to carry through the bill, they changed the order of business.
“The people entrusted us with the responsibility to serve them diligently without regard to politics,” said Nankhumwa.
He added, “However, I wish to assure all Malawians that as opposition Members of Parliament, we will not relent on our noble responsibility of providing the necessary checks and balances to the Executive arm of government. We shall not allow selfish individual political interests to slide the country back to dictatorship”.
