Africa-Press – Malawi. TNM Super League giants Civil Service United have promoted Oscar Kaunda to the position of acting coach following Franco Ndawa’s resignation last month. Ndawa resigned as Civil Coach after accepting an offer to return to Malawi Defence Force.
A letter signed by Civil General Secretary Ronald Chiwaula reads: “I am pleased to inform you that the Executive Committee, during its meeting on January 5, 2023, has agreed to have you assume the responsibility of head coach in acting capacity effective January 6, 2023. The committee trusts that you will deliver successfully in this acting capacity.”
In the meantime, the Civil Servants’ former midfielder Joseph Kachule will be Kaunda’s assistant. However, Kaunda has been given the freedom to choose his backroom staff. The former Mighty Mukuru Wanderers assistant coach said he feels honoured with the appointment.
“This is a big team and being given the responsibility to lead it is a challenge. But I am confident of my ability to handle the pressure that comes with coaching such a big team,” he said.
Kaunda is eligible to lead a Super League team after obtaining a Caf B Coaching Licence, which is a minimum requirement for coaches. His first task is conducting trials for new players, a process that is underway.
Kaunda said he is hunting for three strikers. “We need to beef up our striking force. There is a need for more strikers after losing two of our key players,” he said.
Civil are without Lanken Mwale, who is now with Blue Eagles, and Christopher Kumwembe, who signed for Mighty Mukuru Wanderers. Kaunda may not be very impressed with his options, that include Patrick Phiri and Luke Chima, upfront.
Civil are hoping for a better 2023 season after finishing on position eight in the TNM Super League with 45 points. They last won a trophy in 2016 while Kaunda was in charge.
