Government has asked faith leaders to abide by the amended NGO Act of 2022 Minister of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare Patricia Kaliati made the call in Dowa when Non-Governmental Organisations Regulatory Authority (Ngora) oriented religious leaders on the law.
Kaliati asked for cooperation from the faith leaders for the government to operationalise the law. “Religious leaders always demand accountability and transparency from the government. They themselves run away from being transparent and accountable.
“We want them to be compliant and align their plans to the national or district plans,” Kaliati said.
She also called upon the faith leaders to support the government in ending cases of defilement in the country. She said it is unfortunate that even some men of God are implicated in the malpractice.
“We ask the faith leaders to be exemplary to their followers,” she said.
General Secretary of Evangelical Association of Malawi (ECM), Reverend Francis Mkandawire said the orientation on new regulations would enable the faith leaders understand the law better.
“Now I think we are able to see the need for proper coordination and accountability because the government has engaged us.
“There is so much money passing through not only in the faith community but also secular organisations but there is a gap of accountability. So we believe this engagement will make us move in the right direction in serving Malawians,” Mkandawire said.
