Africa-Press – Malawi. Secondary school students in rural areas say a lack of electricity in such schools is disadvantaging them from competing with fellow learners in urban areas that have access to electricity.
A Form Three student at Dzenza Community Day Secondary School in Dedza, Evereen Malisen, said this on Saturday during the commissioning of a Solar Power project at the school. She called on authorities to balance the issue of access to the same between rural and urban areas.
Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola, who was guest of honour, said to ensure that even communities in rural areas have access to electricity, in the 2023/24 budget, the government scraped off completely VAT and duty on solar appliances to attract investors.
Deputy Minister of Education Nancy Mdooko,is hoping the installation of the solar powered power will improve learners performance during MANEB examinations.
Senior Chief Kaphuka spoke against theft and vandalism of such property. Solar Power Director, Stefano Cruccu, said they are committed in providing energy to rural masses to propel socio-economic growth.
