Africa-Press – Malawi. The Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services has sent stir warning to Malawians particularly in the southern region to be ready as tropical cyclone Freddy is hitting hard with torrential rainfall.

In a statement issued on Sunday, March 12, 2022, the department observes that the southern region still experiencing heavy rains due to Tropical Cyclone Freddy.

“As the southern region is experiencing heavy rains and winds due to the effects of Tropical Cyclone Freddy, the department of Meteorology has warned that the cyclone will fully hit Malawi through Nsanje this evening (Sunday), accompanied with heavy rains and damaging winds.

“The cyclone is currently moving towards Southern Malawi while sustaining wind speed of 130km km per hour. The torrential rainfall in Southern Malawi will exceed 150mm in 24 hours from today, Sunday, and will persist into Monday (Tomorrow) and Tuesday,” reads part of meteorology department weather focus.

It adds, “Weather reports from yesterday at 8 am to today at 8am; from Chididi station in Nsanje recorded 100.6mm, while Chichiri in Blantyre recorded 74.9mm, and Makhanga Agriculture station in Nsanje recorded 55.0mm with Mimosa in Mulanje recording 45.8mm”.

The department therefore is advising the general public against cyclone effect to move to higher ground immediately and follow evacuation orders when issued and continuous rains and strong winds can cause infrastructures, houses and pit latrines to collapse.

“Pay attention to falling trees, power lines, stay away from rivers and streams as may rise rapidly and become dangerous during heavy rains. Avoid travelling during stormy weather; if possible, as driving in strong winds can

be dangerous,” urges the department. DCCMS however says will continue to monitor the movement and strength and potential impacts of Cyclone FREDDY and the nation will be communicated accordingly.
