The Malawi national women’s football team (The Scorchers) is itching to win the first-ever COSAFA Hollywood Bets Women’s Championship this afternoon as they face neighbors Zambia at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria, South Africa. It is promising to be a thrilling encounter between the sister nations Malawi and Zambia.
Malawi who last reached the final in 2021 where they lost to the guest Tanzania have hipped hopes and expectations to many sports fraternity back home having won four games they have played thus far in the group stages and semifinals.
Lovemore Fazil’s girls defeated the host South Africa 4-3 in their opening group A encounter before clashing e-Swatini 8-0 and Madagascar 3-1. Scorchers came from a 1-0 defeat to win 2-1 against resilient Mozambique in the semifinals. Temwa Chawinga scored both goals in a space of 2 minutes.
The Malawi girls have managed to score 17 goals and conceded 5 in the past 4 games while Zambia have netted 9 and let in 2 goals. The reigning Champions who also participated in the just-ended World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations have more experience than Malawi giving them the upper hand against Scorchers.
Supper Queens’ record thus far in the 2023 COSAFA Hollywood Bet championship, is Zambia 0-0 Mozambique, they won 5-1 against Comoros Island before a 3-1 victory over Angola. They struggled to beat Mozambique 1-0 in the first semifinal.
Malawi stand-in Captain Temwa Chawinga says the team expects a tough match against the defending champions this afternoon but vowed to encourage her friends and win the championship.
“Fatigue has clipped us but I have encouraged my friends to die a little more. I have been playing in this tournament for so long now but never won it but this is our turn now. We played Zambia before and we know how they play”, says Temwa.
