Malawi’s Rumphi class 8 learner commits suicide over pregnancy

Africa-Press – Malawi. It has been established that the standard 8 learner who committed suicide in Rumphi on Sunday, left a suicide note in which she disclosed that she decided to hang herself because she was pregnant.

Preliminary findings, backed by the suicide note, indicate that the 13-year-old, identified as Grace Gondwe, was in a sexual relationship with a boy from the area who had been sleeping with her for close to two years.

Grace who, until her suicide, was in standard 8 at Lumphawa primary school, Katowo zone, is said to have left MK500 along with the suicide note which, as indicated in the last paragraph of her notice, was to console her parents for the wrongs she did.

This publication also understands that Grace’s suicide is the second, in a month, in the same area where another girl, who was in form 3, also committed suicide over unspecified reasons.

Other sources have confided in our news desk that there is a rise in cases of teenage pregnancies in Rumphi due to a lack of youth-friendly health services, a situation that is resulting in young girls resorting to committing suicide.
