Unconfirmed reports reaching this publication show that some delegates of the National Women’s Football Association (NWFA) have been abducted in Mzuzu by some unknown assailants believed to be sympathizers of this year’s Football Association of Malawi (FAM)s’ presidential challenger, Fleetwood Haiya.
According to the Chairperson of the Young Human Rights Defenders Network, Mervin Nxumayo the abducted women are forcibly being held at an unidentified lodge around in the city of Mzuzu.
Nxumayo said his office has received reports that the ladies checked in at Sunbird Mzuzu Hotel before being dragged into a car to an unknown holding place where until now they haven’t bathed or changed clothes.
“They are refusing to eat until they are released. They have since gone on hunger strike demanding their immediate release,” Nxumayo said.
Meanwhile, YHRDN has reported the matter to the police to get the women released failing which they will hold vigils at the Sunbird Mzuzu Hotel which is the venue of the elective Indaba. Incumbent FAM President Walter Nyamilandu is being Challenged by Haiya for the post in battle polls, on Saturday, December 16, 2023.
