Africa-Press – Malawi. The Malawi Police Service (MPS) in Phalombe is keeping in custody a primary school teacher and his girlfriend for allegedly being found in possession of fake Malawian banknotes amounting to MK285,000.
Phalombe Police Spokesperson, Jimmy Kapanja, says Elliot Kapita, 31, and Agnes Tung’ande, 25, who stay in Mulanje, were arrested after they deposited MK160,000 with an Airtel Money Agent at the Phalombe Trade Centre.
Kapanja says after searching the two, they were also found with an extra MK125,000, adding that investigations are underway to trace the source of counterfeit currency.
The incident occurred a week after police arrested a man at Mulomba Trading Centre in the district for allegedly being found in possession of counterfeit Malawian banknotes amounting to MK240,000.
