DPP drops Chakwera motorcade case

Africa-Press – Malawi. Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Masauko Chamkakala has dropped the case involving three people who were arrested for allegedly obstructing a presidential convoy. Chamkakala confirmed the development Thursday.

The three— Hector Ndawala, Pearson Chimimba and Lucy Namba— were arrested for various offences allegedly committed when President Lazarus Chakwera’s motorcade was stopped by some people who were part of a funeral procession at HHI Round-about in Blantyre. He said paper work would be done today [Friday].

“Yes, I can confirm that using the powers vested in my office by the Constitution, I have discontinued these cases because much as any threat to the presidential convoy is a serious offence, I am not persuaded that the prosecution of this offence in this particular instance would serve the interests of justice or honour the spirit of the law.

“I have since informed His Excellency the President of this decision, for it is he who appointed me to make such determinations in the interest of justice and in the spirit of serving Malawians,” he said.

The three were suspected of being part of the crowd that disturbed the President’s motorcade on Friday last week, when he was on his way to Chileka International Airport, Blantyre, to board a plane that would take him to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
