Africa-Press – Malawi. Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has decided to settle verified arrears amounting to K800 million it owes Malawi National Football Team players, staff and others. This was approved during the first quarterly meeting held at Sunbird Nkopola in Mangochi on Saturday.
“To settle all verified arrears as at 31.12.23. The priority in payment being the Scorchers Cosafa Cup allowances, Flames Caf and World Cup qualifiers allowances and staff arrears,” the resolutions read.
The association owes Scorchers players and technical panel members over K2 million each for winning the 2023 Cosafa Women’s Championship following the 2-1 victory over Zambia in South Africa. Fam promised to give players and technical panel members K1 million each as a token of appreciation.
In addition, the players and technical panel members were promised an extra K100,000 on top of K200,000 as game bonus for any win at the tournament, translating to K1.5 million for winning five matches. However, Fam only paid K1 million as bonus.
Fam also owes Flames players game bonuses and allowances in the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers and the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers. The Flames beat Liberia 1-0 away in the World Cup qualifiers, which means the players are owed K500,000 for the win and allowances.
Apart from players, Fam is expected to settle arrears for staff, 2023 Fam district leagues, 2023 Fam Women’s Regional Leagues, 2023 Beach Soccer Leagues and Fam Moto Division One Leagues.
The meeting also approved to revive and empower the internal Audit Department with direct line reporting to Fam exco to embrace value addition as a way of enhancing controls and reducing revenue leakages.
Fam is also expected to develop its strategic plan by March 31 this year. Sports analyst George Kaudza Masina welcomed the decision by the new Fam leadership.
Meanwhile, Fam has announced that the 2024 football season will kick off on April 6 and will be preceded by the NBS Bank Charity Shield on March 30. This means FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, who won a quadruple, will face Silvers Strikers in the season curtain-raiser.
Before the start of the season, Fam will conduct workshops and refresher courses for Super League teams’ coaches, media, stewards and supporters, among others.
