Africa-Press – Malawi. President Lazarus Chakwera has pleaded with Malawians to be practising civilised politics if the country is to attain development goals. Chakwera said this at Chinsapo Unicef Ground in Lilongwe at a development rally he held Wednesday.
He said he is aware that there are some people within the political space who survive on bringing others into conflict, such that they would like to see him and State Vice President Saulos Chilima or Cabinet ministers in conflict.
“But I will not do that because I don’t like conflicts,” Chakwera said. The Malawi leader said he is aware that local politics is characterised by chaos as well as swearing, pointing out that he cannot manage to do that.
“I am aware that, in Malawi politics, you don’t applaud others when they have done a good thing and they are still alive but when they die, you start praising them. But I cannot afford to be ungrateful.
“I am aware that Malawi politics is full of hypocrisy, where you smile at someone when, in fact, you are hiding a dagger to deal with them,” Chakwera said.
He observed that the politics he is playing is about development and serving Malawians. According to Chakwera, he is ready to work with every Malawian who wishes the country well.
He noted that the door is open to all politicians who want to work with government to develop the country. “My plea to Malawians is to help me practice my type of politics because your politics will not help to develop Malawi,” Chakwera said.
The Malawi leader said Malawi was bruised by Cyclone Freddy, Covid, cholera and other calamities, adding that, while he is busy working on healing the nation, it would not be wise for Malawians to be quarrelling.
Speaking at the meeting, governing Malawi Congress Party (MCP) deputy secretary general Catherine Gotani Hara described the opposition as expired. She said Malawians should be wary of the opposition, saying, just like expired drugs, the opposition will make Malawians sick. At the same event, MCP welcomed Democratic Progressive Party former district governor for Malingunde, Enerst Phambala.
