Africa-Press – Malawi. Zimbabwe Vice President Kembo Mohadi has said Malawi is among the role models in the region in terms of sports facilities. Mohadi, who was on a three-day official visit in the country, made the remarks after touring Griffin Saenda Indoor Sports Complex and Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe yesterday.

He said among other things, he was in the country to appreciate the facilities. “I am really impressed with the modern sports facilities. The facilities indeed meet international standards. Malawi is one of the few countries in the region which has a stadium approved by Fifa,” Mohadi, who was accompanied by several officials, said.

The two facilities were among the venues for the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games which the country hosted in 2022. Saenda Complex hosted netball, basketball and volleyball events whereas BNS was the venue for both boys and girls football. Although Saenda Complex hosted the games, it has not been fully completed but works have stalled for over one year due to lack of funds.

Uchizi MkandawireThe facility needs an extra K7 billion to be fully completed which means the figure has doubled to K15.7 billion.

Minister of Youth and Sports Uchizi Mkandawire said the Saenda Complex and the Aquatic Sports Complex at Kamuzu Institute for Sports (KIS) will be completed in this Financial Year.

“We are optimistic that the projects will be completed. There were some technical changes which led to an increase in the cost. The total cost for the Saenda project is at K15 billion,” Mkandawire said. President Lazarus Chakwera in his State of National Address (Sona) said work is expected to resume in this fiscal year.
