TNM Super League leaders FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers tightened their grip on the summit of the log table following vital wins in their respective matches Sunday.
After the 10-day Fifa International Break, Bullets returned to TNM Super League action in style following a 2-0 victory over Mighty Tigers at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.
At Champion Stadium, Wanderers maintained their impressive start to the season with a 0-3 emphatic victory over Kamuzu Barracks.
But defending champions Silver Strikers’ inconsistent start to the season continued yesterday when they shared the spoils following a 1-1 stalemate with Blue Eagles at Nankhaka Stadium in Lilongwe.
Bullets remain in control with 21 points from eight matches, two points above Wanderers, who have played a match less.
At Kamuzu Stadium, Bullets sweated to get maximum points against a well-drilled Tigers.
After a barren first half, Hassan Kajoke and Babatunde Adepoju sealed victory for Bullets in the last 10 minutes of the match.
Kajoke broke the deadlock in the 82nd minute when he combined well with substitute Maxwell Gasten Phodo to score past substitute Tigers goalkeeper Lucky Tizgola, who replaced Sunganani Mponda.
Five minutes later, Babatunde secured the three points when he timed his run perfectly, emerging from behind defenders to calmly slot the ball home with Tizgola rooted to his line.
It was relief for Bullets as they bounced back from the 1-0 loss they suffered at the hands of Wanderers.
Pater MpondaBullets Coach Peter Mponda praised his players for showing great character.
“We saw how Tigers were defending—closing spaces and going one-on-one. So, we brought in players who could shift defenders out of their positions and use their pace. Credit to the players for the good job,” Mponda said.
Tigers are 11th with 10 points from nine matches.
At Champion Stadium, Wanderers made another strong statement in the early stages of the title race.
Gaddie Chirwa, Blessings Singini and Wisdom Mpinganjira were on target for the Nomads in the second half.
Wanderers Coach Bob Mpinganjira felt his charges deserved the victory after a good performance,
“We are minding our own business. We are not focusing much on what other teams are doing. We will take each match as it comes,” Mpinganjira said.
