Africa-Press – Malawi. CCAP Livingstonia Synod’s Early Childhood Development (ECD) Department has received a logistical boost after buying a vehicle and three motorcycles worth over K68 million using funds from the Roger Federer Foundation,
Speaking during the commissioning and dedication ceremony in Mzuzu City Thursday, the Synod’s deputy general secretary, Reverend Isaiah Mhone, said the support comes at a crucial time as the department has been facing mobility challenges.
MHONE—We make sure that children are assistedMhone said the church was committed to uplifting ECD education in Malawi considering that early learning was crucial in raising an informed society.
“We, as a synod, understand that we cannot have better citizens and Christians if the foundation has been neglected. So, we make sure that children are assisted at the earliest stages of their lives. This is why we are so committed to issues of ECD. It’s not only the synod; the government, too, is playing a huge role,” he said.
Executive director for the Synod’s ECD Department, Reverend Nase Chunga, said the department was implementing a School Readiness Initiative in 14 traditional authorities in Karonga, Mzimba and Nkhata Bay in the Northern Region.
He, however, said they had been constrained by transport challenges.
Chunga commended the government for waiving import duty on the vehicle, which cost K54 million.
Each of the three motorcycles was purchased at K4 million.
“We are implementing the School Readiness Initiative, which seeks to ensure that there is quality ECD services. Under the initiative, we are training caregivers and upgrading community-based child care centres in hard-to-reach areas across the three districts,” he said.
The project started in 2018 and is expected to wind up in 2026.
