Africa-Press – Malawi. Local Government Minister Richard Chimwendo Banda has cautioned chiefs against engaging in corruption during the distribution of relief items.
Chimwendo Banda said the government expected traditional leaders to be refraining from favouritism and be disciplined when executing their duties.
He made the remarks on Friday when he stalled Traditional Authority (TA) Mwambo to Senior Chief and Sub- Traditional Authority Idana to Traditional Authority.
“Chiefs should help root out injustices in their areas and be professional. They are part of government and their actions should be ethical. We expect them to be government partners in the implementation of development interventions,” Chimwendo Banda said.
Senior Chief Mwambo said he would help stakeholders in promoting unity among community members.
“I will be devoted in serving the citizenry in my area. I am looking forward to engaging with other partners in advocating for development in Zomba,” Mwambo said.
Senior Chief Mwambo, whose real name is Wellingtone Chiponde, and TA Idana, real name Hawa Buleya, were firstly installed in 2024 before their recent promotions.
The elevation of Senior Chief Mwambo means Zomba now has four senior chiefs.
The others are senior chiefs Chikowi, Malemia and Mulumbe.
