Africa-Press – Malawi. President Lazarus Chakwera has praised the resilience of Malawians and outlined plans to develop the country further through the provision of support to youths and enterprises.
He said this yesterday, when he continued on his campaign tour of the Northern Region.
Speaking at Mpherembe Trading Centre in Mzimba District, Chakwera acknowledged the various challenges Malawians have faced over the past four years, including Covid, floods and drought, saying they impacted even strong food-producing areas such as Mzimba.
“I have been with you throughout these challenges, working tooth and nail to ensure that you survive these hard times.
“My government will continue to implement programmes that will help cushion the impact of these challenges. We will continue to provide relief facilities as well as loans to people so that more young people can venture into business. We want to create a mass of millionaires through enterprise development,” Chakwera said.
The President also urged young people to actively participate in governance and development initiatives in their communities.
“There is pride in hard work,” he said.
On his part, Malawi Congress Party presidential running mate-cum Industry and Trade Minister Vitumbiko Mumba echoed Chakwera’s sentiments.
He then announced new strategies aimed at creating wealth among Malawians.
“We are coming up with a list of businesses that will only be done by Malawians,” Mumba said.
“By doing this, we are reducing monopoly of some businesses by foreigners in industries that Malawians are relying on.”
Traditional Authority Inkosi Mpherembe applauded the government for bringing piped water to the area.
“Through the Malawi Education Reform Programme, schools in the area have also been provided with school blocks,” he said. Chakwera and Mumba are holding meetings with traditional leaders and addressing mini rallies in major trading centres across the Northern Region as part of their campaign engagements. —Mana
