Africa-Press – Malawi. Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) elections are on in Lilongwe today with all but two positions going unopposed.
Delegates to the polls will only line up to elect office holders for positions of vice president (VP) and general secretary (GS), with the rest having just one candidate.
This means positions of president, treasurer and vice treasurer are all going unopposed.
CONTESTING—BillieInterim GS Yamikani Khungwa Kauma will fight to retain her seat against new name Mbumba Kalikokha Nyalo, while FDH Netball Premier League GS Tadala Billy is up against Nthombizana Thindwa for the position of VP.
Khungwa Kauma received 14 nominations while Kalikokha Nyalo managed 10, with Billy getting eight against Thindwa’s two.
Chairperson for the elections, Justice Zione Ntaba, said the polls have 52 affiliates who are eligible to vote.
“They have all been vetted and we expect a free and fair election,” the High Court judge said.
Khungwa Kauma downplayed her chances of going through.
“In an election you do not underrate your opponent. Whoever wins between me and my opponent is going to serve netball in the country. So I am wishing my opponent all best the ahead of the polls.
“The affiliates are the ones to decide and I believe they all know what I and my colleagues in the Nam executive have done within the short time we were given to run the game on an interim basis. May the best candidate win,” she said.
Netball committees from the North and South will have 10 delegates each casting their ballots while those from the Centre and the East will have 12 and eight, respectively.
There will also be six votes from the current Nam executive, with two each from the National Coaches, the Umpires’ and Bench Management committees.
After today’s elections, Nam will hold regional elections with chairpersons automatically taking up executive committee member positions.
Interim president Vitumbiko Gubuduza is assured of the hot seat with interim treasurer Cecilia Mtukule in the same situation.
Incumbent interim vice treasurer Anastasia Kaphale will also continue just like interim vice GS Janet Chiumia
