Africa-Press – Malawi. A Day of Relief, Joy, and Closure for Supporters of the Business Mogul!
Blantyre was buzzing with excitement today as Malawians celebrated the final legal step confirming that Dr. Thomson Mpinganjira is officially and completely free. Cheers of relief and joy echoed across social platforms and business circles as the Supreme Court of Appeal formally removed his case from its list — a moment many supporters described as “the end of a long and painful journey.”
Dr. Mpinganjira had filed an appeal challenging his conviction for offering advantages to public officers, but that appeal became redundant after former President Lazarus Chakwera exercised his constitutional authority to grant him a presidential pardon during the 61st Independence Day celebrations. With the stroke of a pen, the former President restored his freedom, igniting hope among many who believed the business giant deserved a second chance.
However, even with the pardon, procedure required that the Supreme Court of Appeal meet in open court to formally record the withdrawal of his appeal. Today, that final formality took place in Blantyre — quietly but symbolically powerful.
A distinguished panel of Justices presided over the session:
•Justice of Appeal Frank Kapanda, SC
•Justice of Appeal John Katsala, SC
•Justice of Appeal Charles Mkandawire, SC
•Justice of Appeal Rowland Mbvundula, SC
•Justice of Appeal Dorothy nyaKaunda Kamanga, SC
•Acting Justices of Appeal Fiona Mwale and Texious Masoamphambe
The record now reflects what many have waited for: the case is closed, the appeal is gone, and Dr. Mpinganjira’s freedom is complete.
For his supporters, today was more than a legal event — it was a moment to thank God, to celebrate, and to embrace a new beginning. Social media was ablaze with messages like “Finally free!”, “God has done it!” and “Let him rebuild and rise again.”
As the sun set over Blantyre, one feeling dominated the air: relief.
A chapter has ended. A man has been released.
And for many, today was simply a day to say: “Thank God, Dr. Mpinganjira is free!”
