Africa-Press – Malawi. The opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has indicated that it will not let claims that there was extravagance at the State House go unchallenged.
The party has since announced that Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Simplex Chithyola Banda, is today expected to respond to the claims.
Last Friday, Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha disclosed in Parliament, when he presented the mid-year budget review statement, that K67 billion that was allocated to State residences had been exhausted.
MCP spokesperson Jesse Kabwila told The Daily Times that Chithyola, who is a former Finance minister, would respond to the issue during his response in the august House.
Meanwhile, Mwanamvekha has said the government will conduct an audit to find out how the funds were utilised.
Speaking to journalists after presenting the statement, Mwanamvekha said it was surprising that the Office of the President and Cabinet had exhausted the allocation before the review.
“We will surely audit how the funds have been utilised, especially in cases where there are clear indications of suspected criminal activity,” Mwanamvekha said.
