Africa-Press – Malawi. Concerned civil servants under Malawi’s contributory pension scheme have demanded the immediate dissolution of the board of the Public Service Pension Trust Fund (PSPTF) and the refund of money used to purchase the controversial Amaryllis Hotel, warning of nationwide industrial action if their demands are not met.
In a letter dated March 15, 2026, signed by Gerald Chirombo, Chair, George Ngosi, Secretary, Francis Makawa, Member, Mtendere Mlenga, Member, Joseph Mwaungulu, Member, the group says the trustees have failed to protect the interests of contributors and should therefore be dissolved with immediate effect, with their offices sealed to allow for investigations.
“We should say categorically that we are totally in disbelief with what we are witnessing in this country. As concerned civil servants, we are very bitter with this daylight robbery called Amaryllis gate. We were not even informed about this purchase beforehand to appreciate the situation before a decision was reached to buy this so called luxury hotel,” reads their letter.
The group further says the current situation has led to them to conclude that trade unions are no longer ready to stand up for their members, and that most of them are there to enrich themselves, and accuses them of being “a bunch of thieves.”
The civil servants are then demanding that the money used in the acquisition of the luxury hotel be paid back within five days from the day the letter is received.
They further want all individuals who allegedly benefited from the transaction to be publicly named.
“The board of trustees deserves to be dissolved with immediate effect. There is no need for you to continue appearing before the Public Accounts Committee while holding your undeserved positions. The trade unions that have watched this mediocre board of trustees must also provide answers to what were they doing at the time this deal was being negotiated,” the group demanded.
Additionally, the group is calling for the arrest of all board members and individuals suspected of benefiting from the deal, saying they should answer charges while in custody to prevent possible concealment of evidence.
“All board of trustees who benefited from this Amaryllis gate be arrested and answer charges while in custody. There is no need for them to be out here making efforts to conceal evidence.
The enquiries made by our Members of parliament have exposed these thieves masquerading as people of integrity,” added the concerned Civil Servants.
The civil servants have also demanded that all those involved in the transaction voluntarily report themselves to the nearest police station and accept responsibility for what the group describes as the mismanagement of pension funds.
They have warned that failure to meet the demands will lead to a nationwide stay-away from work by civil servants under the contributory pension scheme.
The group also says it plans to hold a press briefing and organize vigils at the homes and offices of trustees until they resign from their positions.
