The Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) is expected to move away from the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs as plans are underway to establish an independent National Prosecution Authority in the country, The Daily Times has learned.

Director of Public Prosecutions Fostino Maele said the new independent body would oversee all criminal prosecutions in Malawi, replacing the current arrangement where prosecutors are drawn from his office, the police and the ministry.

Under the proposed structure, the authority would recruit its own officers to conduct all criminal prosecutions in their respective duty stations.
