Africa-Press – Malawi. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Malawi has confirmed the return of the first batch of 150 Malawian citizens who were displaced due to anti-foreigner violence in South Africa as part of a voluntary repatriation process.

In a statement, the ministry noted that the returnees left the Western Cape province on Saturday and were traveling by road through Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

They are expected to arrive late Monday evening at the Mwanza border post in Malawi, after which they will proceed to Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre to complete the necessary procedures before continuing their journey to their local destinations.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the 150 Malawian citizens are among a number of foreign nationals who were displaced and sought refuge in temporary camps in Mossel Bay, Western Cape.

The ministry explained that the evacuation and return home were made possible by a multidisciplinary task force from Malawi, which was sent to the Western Cape in coordination with the Malawi High Commission in South Africa.

Malawi has assured that measures have been taken to ensure the safety and well-being of the returnees, including transportation services and consular support, in collaboration with the relevant government ministries and agencies.
