FDH Bank Premiership returns with Lilongwe derby

Action in the FDH Bank Premiership returns this weekend after a three-week break with all roads leading to Civo Stadium in Lilongwe where the first Capital City derby of the season will take place.

The showdown between Silver Strikers and Civil Service United is set to divide the capital with either side itching to bag the bragging rights.

Silver head into the crunching tie with an advantage as they lie second on the table with 13 points.

They are tied with defending champions Mighty Wanderers who are at the summit courtesy of a better goal difference.

The Central Bankers are in fi ne form having won four games, drawing once and losing once since the top flight league kicked off.

The Area 47 side has also been effective in front of goal, hitting the back of the net 10 times and collecting the ball from their net just twice.

The story is different for Civil who have seen their dream start to the season crumbling in three weeks of action where they have lost as many matches back-to-back.

Civil will be hoping for revenge after losing both the first and second fixtures in the 2025 campaign, losing 2-0 away and 1-0 at home.

Silver have dominated the last 28 meetings between the two teams, winning 13 fixtures against Civil’s eight, with seven assignments ending in stalemates.

During the meetings, the Bankers have also been flying high in terms of goals, shaking Civil’s net 36 times while their rivals have netted ten goals less.

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has highlighted the match on its website, stating that its talking point will be Silver’s players who crossed the floor from Civil.

“Saturday’s fixture carry an important statistic for one Yankho Billiati who swapped yellow for sky blue at the start of the season. Billiati will be returning to Area 9 for the first and surely all the focus will be on him and another former civil servant Festus Duwe who also switched from area 9 to Area 47.

“On paper, Silver Strikers look the better side, but this is no ordinary fixture. This is a fixture that has divided families before.

Silver’s strength this season has been the ability to find the goals from multiple streams. All of Silver’s attacking players have been in fine form banging the goals for fun,” part of a report on Sulom’s website reads.

Silver coach Peter Mgangira will be counting on forwards Charles Chipala and Festus Duwe to turn on the magic, while skipper Zebron Kalima will be expected to keep the engine room running.

Civil captain Righteous Banda is expected to continue leading his teammates on the pitch with his consistent performances which have seen him starting all games this season.

Coach Abbas Makawa will be hoping that Banda will keep the supply lines open for strikers Madalitso Maso and Frank Chizuze.
