Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) has said it is consolidating complaints, suggestions and other communications about constituency and ward boundary demarcation exercise underway in the country.<\/p>\n

Mec Director of Media and Public Relations Sangwani Mwafulirwa said the commission will scrutinise the complaints and come up with its position before the final report on the exercise is released.<\/p>\n

The development comes after leaders of a group called Voice of the Northern Region said five constituencies that have been suggested to be added to the current 33 constituencies in the region are not enough looking at topography of some districts.<\/p>\n

But in an interview, Mwafulirwa said Mec is compiling all the complaints, adding they will soon respond according to how each grievance was presented.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe commission will respond to all suggestions being received. We have received a number of communications and we continue to receive them. At the moment, I don\u2019t have an actual number of the communications because they are coming in various formats,\u201d Mwafulirwa said.<\/p>\n

Voice of the Northern Region Chairperson Davie Botha said their committee will soon meet to decide on how best they will raise their concern. \u201cThis is a serious matter but Mec seems to be at ease. We will see our next step, whether to seek legal advice or show our anger in another way,\u201d Botha said.<\/p>\n

The group claims Mec ignored land, terrain and communication means when it suggested demarcation in constituencies in the Northern Region. However, according to a report which we have seen, Mec, for example, in Chitipa took into consideration land, population of voters and topography of the district before coming up with additional two constituencies to the three the district has.<\/p>\n
