Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>Legendary festival Segou\u2019Art held its 18th edition in Mali on the banks of the Niger river despite the sanctions and embargo imposed by ECOWAS that led to the interruption of direct flights as well as border closures.<\/p>\n

Despite the difficulties, Malian artists have shown their resilience and solidarity, among them several young female artists committed to women\u2019s rights.<\/p>\n

Almost half of dozen musicians scheduled for the big concert \u2013 a landmark event on the banks of the Niger River \u2013 were women. Mariam Kon\u00e9 is a rising star of the new generation.<\/p>\n

She told us about the role of women in Malian society. \u201cMy song \u201cSo\u00efna Mousso\u201d pays tribute to women. In spite of the household chores, the education of the children, she is always asked to keep smiling\u201d, said singer Mariam Kon\u00e9.<\/p>\n

About fifty young artists from West Africa took part in the competition of S\u00e9gou\u2019Art \u2013 the contemporary art section of the festival. Ind\u00e9pendance Dognon received the 3rd prize of Segou\u2019Art for her series of sculptures entitled \u201cDouleurs\u201d which represent the pain caused by breast cancer.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really to represent the pain and destruction of this disease. You will see that on the sculpture there is a missing part. It\u2019s really to show that breast cancer is not only the breasts that are cut off, it\u2019s really a part of the person that is removed\u201d explained the visual artist from Mali.<\/p>\n

The dancer and performer Bibata Ma\u00efga from Gao in northern Mali is also part of the new contemporary dance scene in West Africa. Her performance \u201cL\u2019Esprit de l\u2019eau\u201d is dedicated to the divinity of the river Niger.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy aim is to magnify women and to show the natural powers that exist in every woman\u201d, said the dancer. Bibata\u2019s performance ended on the Niger River \u2013 a symbol of power in Malian culture.<\/p>\n
