Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>The World Bank has said it will continue supporting Agricultural Commercialisation (Agcom) targeting smallholder and medium scale farmers in Malawi. World Bank Country Director Mara Warwick said this yesterday when she visited Acades Youth Cooperative at Mpingu in Lilongwe.<\/p>\n

Warwick said the bank was pleased to see many lives being reached through the project. She was also impressed to see a group of young people investing their Agcom resources in legumes farming.<\/p>\n

\u201cWorld Bank is always pleased to see young people investing their resources in agriculture. This country can improve economically if people are able to do commercial farming. This is why we, as a bank, will continue to help such initiatives for the betterment of people in the country,\u201d Warwick said.<\/p>\n

Secretary for Agriculture Sandram Maweru said Agcom was on the right trajectory to achieve its targets. He said more than 40,000 households are already benefitting from the project, out of which 57 percent are women and 28 percent youth.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo date, the project has approved 229 productive alliances. These are sub-projects with ready markets.<\/p>\n

\u201cGovernment has been quite impressed with the strong performance by the current Agcom project. Coupled with the overwhelming demand from our smallholder farmers, it is only proper to request the bank for a successor project with more resources,\u201d Maweru said. Recently, Agcom disbursed K2.1 billion matching grants to a number of cooperatives in the Central Region.<\/p>\n
