Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera has pardoned 106 prisoners in the country as part of Easter celebrations. According to a press statement signed by Secretary for the Ministry of Homeland Security, Kennedy Nkhoma on Thursday, April 14, 2022 the President has pardoned 106 prisoners and most of which are ones with minor offenses and have demonstrated good behavioral reform.<\/p>\n

Reads the press release, \u201cThe Ministry of Homeland Security wishes to inform the general public that it has pleased the State President of the Republic of Malawi, His Excellency Dr Lazarous McCarthy Chakwera to pardon a total of 106 prisoners as part of Easter celebration.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe prisoners who have been pardoned are those who have been charged with minor offences have demonstrated good behavioral reform.\u201d<\/p>\n

The statement further indicates that the pardon is an act of mercy in keeping with the spirit of the Easter festive season.\u201d National Prison Service Spokesperson Chimwemwe Mike Shaba said the 106 figure cuts across the whole country. Since his ascendancy to the high office, the president has pardoned a total of 813 prisoners.<\/p>\n

Last year, a total 156 prisoners were pardoned to mark the Malawi\u2019s 57th independence celebration in 2021; while in 2020, the President pardoned 551 inmates, 52 during Christmas and 499 in August to decongest prisons in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

Christians all over the world are from Friday to Monday expected to celebrate Easter, which is the commemoration of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. During this time, Christians hold prayers and show acts of mercy and kindness.<\/p>\n
