Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>As Christians continue with Easter commemorations, President Lazarus Chakwera on Good Friday led the nation in observing the Way of the Cross, calling on Malawians to focus on the future and hold on to hope.<\/p>\n

Chakwera said this in Lilongwe Friday when he attended prayers as part of the Easter Celebrations. He said, among other challenges, Covid-19 pandemic has inflicted pain on Malawi.<\/p>\n

He however said the resurrection of Jesus Christ, which is commemorated during Easter, is a reminder that things will get better and that the country\u2019s economy will be back on its feet again.<\/p>\n

\u201cGod will sometimes use suffering to correct our ways as a people, this should also teach us that God may not take away all our challenges at once.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have problems resulting from climate change, the Covid-19 pandemic and also the Russia-Ukraine war but in all this we have hope through the resurrection power of Jesus Christ,\u201d Chakwera said.<\/p>\n

He said believers and authorities should remain patriotic to the country and do the right things at the right time, as one way of inspiring the younger generation about the possibility of meeting Malawi\u2019s development aspirations, as stipulated in the Malawi 2063.<\/p>\n

\u201cMindset change should begin with each of us as individuals. Do not expect any other person to change while you watch and wait. Let us love our country and I hope that the church will be exemplary in all of its undertakings,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

One of the attractions at the event was a symbolic 28-flag-and-torch parade, with each flag representing a district in the country. A few Kilometres away in Area 18, Vice President Saulos Chilima also joined congregants at St Patrick\u2019s Catholic Church for Way of the Cross procession.<\/p>\n

In Zomba, Christians at St George\u2019s Anglican Church held prayers at the church before leaving for the Way of The Cross. It was the same at St Charles Lwanga Catholic Church, Zomba CCAP, Zambezi Evangelical Church and Soul Winners, though processions here were held within church premises.<\/p>\n

Zomba CCAP Moderator, Rev Charles Masambuka, said the day was important because it brings Christians closer to the Lord in prayer. And in Mzuzu, Christians started commemorations silently as they held Way of the Cross prayers in and around their Church premises.<\/p>\n

At St Mark Anglican Church, one of the priests Canon Aswell Tembo said the mood was dampened by the Covid-19 pandemic. He said this year\u2019s Easter should be celebrated with love, as signalled by Jesus through his death on the cross.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a big day in Christianity. It is the beginning of the triumph by the death of our Lord Jesus Christ who will resurrect on Sunday. You know Christ loved the world that he allowed to die so that the lost sheep would be redeemed. So, the significance of this day tells us or dwells on love,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

In Blantyre, Catholics, Anglicans and Christians of other denominations were also engaged in similar undertakings. Holy Cross Anglican Church in Chilomoni jointly held Way of Cross parade with Saint Paul\u2019s Cathedral and the procession started from Chilomoni down to the Cathedral in Blantyre Central Business District.<\/p>\n

Dean of the Cathedral, the Very Reverend Father Alinafe Dan Mazimbo said they held the parade jointly to show unity in the death of Christ. Mazimbo asked Christians to repent and turn to God during this year\u2019s Easter.<\/p>\n
