Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>Government has increased civil servants\u2019 salaries by 12 percent, with the lowest paid civil servant getting an extra K220,000 per year and the highest paid getting an additional K2 million per year.<\/p>\n

According to a circular from the Department of Human Resource Management and Development issued today, and signed by the secretary for the department Blessings Chilabade, the increment is effective 1 April, 2022.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese salaries have been approved after thorough consultations with Civil Servants Trade Union and Teachers Union of Malawi,\u201d said Chilabade.<\/p>\n

Government also increased salaries of civil servants in August last year. The increment means the lowest paid civil servant on Grade R1 will be getting K1.81 million per year from K1.59 million per year.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, the highest paid civil servant on Grade A4 will be walking away with K40.2 million from K38.0 million per annum. Secretary General for the Civil Servants Trade Union, Mavuto Kaonga, has since hailed government for increasing the salaries but he asked for further increment.<\/p>\n

The increment comes amid a sharp rise in cost of living over the past months. Centre for Social Concern said earlier this month that a family of five requires a minimum of K244,000 to survive.<\/p>\n
