Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>Malawi is losing about five percent of its gross domestic product due to climate change, Director of Environmental Af\u00adfairs in the Ministry of Natural Resources Taon\u00adga Mbale Luka has said.<\/p>\n

Luka was speaking in Lilongwe on Monday at the start of a five-day conference on the loss and damage and climate finance to help shape the narratives for Africa ahead of CoP27.<\/p>\n

The conference has been organised by the Pan-African Climate Jus\u00adtice Alliance and Civil Society Network on Climate Change (Cis\u00adonecc). Mbale described the loss as colossal, saying the resources lost could have been used for other devel\u00adopment activities.<\/p>\n

Cisonecc Executive Director Julius Ngoma said the loss could be bigger than the five percent, saying there are other losses em\u00adanating from climate change that are hard to compute.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost of the times, we are looking at the losses in financial terms but there are other elements such as soil fertility, natu\u00adral forest and others which are not com\u00adputed easily but need to be accounted for to paint a full picture of the losses,\u201d Ngoma said.<\/p>\n

He said climate change is not just coming with issues of adaptation and mit\u00adigation, saying even where people do adap\u00adtation, there are also challenges of other issues in the name of loss and damage.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo we need financ\u00ading for mitigation, ad\u00adaptation and we also need financing on top of that for loss and damage.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow on the part of loss and damages, we are saying Afri\u00adcan countries need to improve on our end of documenting what has been damaged and present these things to all those that are go\u00ading to help us in terms of financing,\u201d Ngoma said.<\/p>\n

Pan-African Cli\u00admate Justice Alliance Head of Programmes and Research Charles Mwangi said, in the last two CoPs, Africa came out disappoint\u00aded because there was nothing much to gain because the African position has always been watered down. He said Africa is one of the hardest-hit continents by the cli\u00admate crisis due to pollution created else\u00adwhere.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe regional con\u00adference we are hold\u00ading in Malawi would ensure that matters of loss and damage receive high visibility in the run-up to the Egypt-hosted 27 Con\u00adference of Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Cli\u00admate Change later in November 2022.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe conference aims to achieve three broad outcomes which include deriv\u00ading a common under\u00adstanding of the extent of loss and damages, the scope of past cli\u00admate-related damage as correlated by pro\u00adfessionals and model anticipated damages,\u201d Mwangi said.<\/p>\n
