Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>The Malawi Gaming Board (MGB) has urged Malawians to take gambling not as a business but as a form of entertainment. MGB Licencing Manager Mirriam Kumbuyo was speaking in Lilongwe during an engagement with the media.<\/p>\n

She said some people are tempted to think that gambling is a business, thereby promoting addiction. \u201cWe want to make it clear that gambling is not a source of income. Do not spend too much time on gambling.<\/p>\n

\u201cTake gambling as a form of entertainment. Find other sustainable sources of income,\u201d Kumbuyo said.<\/p>\n

With the economy facing challenges and unemployment rates being on the rise, many Malawians, especially the youth, have turned to betting, especially sports betting, as a means of survival.<\/p>\n

This has resulted in many youths patronising sports betting shops from morning to evening, hoping to hit the jackpot. Saint John of God Hospital Addiction Recovery Services Coordinator, Tabitha Dzoole, observed that high prevalence of poverty has driven many people to betting.<\/p>\n

Dzoole said Malawians need to be careful when gambling to avoid addiction. MGB was established under the Gaming Act No. 26 of 1996, as amended in 1998, as a statutory body to regulate gaming; control and licence gaming premises; to impose and collect tax on gaming.<\/p>\n
