Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>Farmers Voice Africa (FAVOA) says agricultural cooperatives enhance coordination among farmers and are one of the ways of reaching out to every farmer, enabling the farmers to benefit from their labour.<\/p>\n

FAVOA is a non-profit Farmers\u2019 organization that was established in 2017 to look after the welfare of farmers and the marginalized. Speaking with Malawi24, President of the organization Brighton Jelemoti said that their operations are principally based on Advocacy, Capacity building, and Marketing in agriculture industry.<\/p>\n

Jelemoti added that they embarked on assisting primary farmers\u2019 cooperatives, formulating regional cooperative unions, which comprise of farmers\u2019 cooperatives and associations across Malawi to simplify and enhance coordination among farmers\u2019 cooperatives and associations in planning and implementation of all agricultural developmental initiatives through well-safeguarded and monitored leaderships.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a well-known fact that majority of the country\u2019s cooperatives are agro-based though some are also in the mining, industrial, forestry, and financial sector which is therefore likely that Malawi needs more of agricultural transformation through these self-sustained farmer organizations to boost the country\u2019s economy and lower levels of unemployment,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

On his part, Board Chair of the organisation Professor Kanyama Phiri said due to challenges being encountered by farmers\u2019 cooperatives in Malawi, and looking at the government\u2019s strategy (FODS) that is aiming at revamping the cooperative-sector, FAVOA as a proactive youth-led, and farmer-centric organization has joined the Ministry of Agriculture through the exercise of harnessing the long-time fragmented and degrading cooperatives into powerful regional leaderships thereby forming robust cooperatives Unions.<\/p>\n

Phiri said that farmers have challenged the initiative itself that they shall collectively push for its expansion and campaign for more affiliates . On her part, Secretary of the organization Ruth Ibrahim said the promotion of cooperatives in some other African countries like in Kenya, has proved to be the main source of employment and key driver of the economy.<\/p>\n

Ibrahim noted that during the commemoration of International Day of Cooperatives (IDC) recently, the theme itself emphasised that cooperatives are main power to act on sustainable future.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe main goal for Malawi Farmer Organization Development Strategy (FODs) 2020-2025, has again emphasised the prominence of transforming our agriculture sector through farmers\u2019 cooperatives which are now facing the following challenges; Limited human resource capacity, weak leadership, limited access to financing, low production and productivity, limited access to output markets, unfavourable policy and legal framework and uncoordinated or fragmented farmer organization bodies,\u201d she explained Established in 2017, FAVOA is a registered organization with valid certificate since 2018.<\/p>\n
