Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>Malawians should brace themselves for excess blackouts as Electricity Supply Cooperation of Malawi (ESCOM)\u2019s power generating system is expecting to slow down during winter season.<\/p>\n

The Chief Executive officer for ESCOM, Kamkwamba Kumwenda, disclosed this on Tuesday, May 24, 2022 to the Parliamentary committee during Budget and Finance meeting.<\/p>\n

Kumwenda said the country relies on 60 Megawatts produced by Salima solar power system and currently, there is no battery which will affect it\u2019s function during the winter season.<\/p>\n

He added that the absence of AGGRECO has also impacted on the prolonged blackouts as the country was relying on their generators to produce more electricity.<\/p>\n

Chairperson for the Committee, Ralph Jooma said it is very disheartening to see the country having inadequate reliable generators. Jooma said the country was suppose to take sample of AGGRECO generators and purchase the same to avoid the challenges faced now.<\/p>\n

He added that the Committee will try their best to source Funds for ESCOM to prevent the circumstances anticipated. Malawians have been experiencing frequent blackouts after losing 130 Megawatts earlier this year due to the heavy rains that damaged Kapichira Power Station. In march, government terminated its contract with Aggreko Power Solutions Limited reducing the already shortened power production in the country.<\/p>\n
