Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>The public has taken note with concern that there are a number of big posh cars with tinted windows and plying on the roads of Malawi without displaying their registration number plates.<\/p>\n

While the police, at official and impromptu checkpoints stop any car without registration number plates, these big SUVs are not being stopped to check why.<\/p>\n

It is believed that such vehicles are used by high ranking officials, such as State House staff, Judges, Ministers, MPs, Police and that others are taking advantage to do the same knowing they would not be stopped by the police.<\/p>\n

Renowned journalist and social issues commentator, Idriss Ali Nassah posted on his Facebook page a picture of a SUV without licence plates which he had driven behind from Mangochi to Blantyre.<\/p>\n

He reported: \u201cTailgating this big car all the way from Mangochi to Blantyre was much fun. At security checkpoints, the police saluted and quickly waved it through.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am told that big SUVs with tinted widows and no number plates are today\u2019s functional equivalent of yesteryear\u2019s \u2018Ana a Dad\u2019 \u2014 the untouchables.<\/p>\n

\u201cAgain, where we are going is where we are coming from and where we are coming from is where we are going. That, in many ways, is Malawi\u2019s progress for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Ana a Dad\u2019 (President Peter Mutharika\u2019s kids) were plates that some Progressive People\u2019s Party (DPP) cadres used on their cars complete with a DPP-branded neckerchief attached on the rear view mirror \u2014 which the police never stopped for fear of reprisals.<\/p>\n

\u2018Ana a Dad\u2019-plated cars disappeared on the roads and Nassah\u2019s observation prompted Yusuf Miles to comment: \u201cAwa ndi Ana a Abusa (are these for President Chakwera?) Kapena ng\u2019ona zikulu zikulu (or big crocodiles?) What an upgrade, the Ana a Dad were driving cheap Nissan bakkies \u2014 these ones are swimming in real big monies with those SUVs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chisamsoka Manda was of the opinion that \u201cthis is a bad system\u201d, which as a country needs to be condemned\u201d to which Che Msume indicated that its a \u201csystem, we can\u2019t break it\u201d.<\/p>\n

Akuzike Liwanda asked if \u201cCourt Judges, Ministers, the Police drive cars without number plates, why not us if we say we are all equal at Law face value?\u201d<\/p>\n

Jay Mtame jokingly suggested that he would remove his as well, to which Nassah said: \u201cYou can then easily transport any contraband, I can tell you. Police will salute and open checkpoints for you \u2014 no questions asked.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mungoni Harawa said \u201cMalawi is refusing to change\u201d while Davie Chalira this is \u201ctreading on a dangerous path and a total violation of traffic rules and regulations\u201d.<\/p>\n

Earnest Kanyenda observed that the \u201cState House has many of those plateless ones\u201d, to which Dannie Grant Phiri agreed, saying: \u201cThese vehicles with invisible number plates are a menace. They normally park where a sane person can\u2019t. \u2018Ya ku State House\u2019, people comment in resignation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Journalist Aubrey Mchulu said: \u201cWe make three steps forward and take two backwards, surely we can\u2019t make progress. The Promised Land remains a pipedream\u201d while Gilbert Kamiyala opined that these are \u201cTrappings of Power \u2014 the more things change, the more they remain the same\u201d.<\/p>\n
