Africa-Press<\/a> – Malawi<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Five people have died while five others escaped with injuries following a road accident involving a bus and a minibus at Linthipe 2 in Dedza District. The accident involved a Toyota Hiace minibus and a Higer bus which collided at Makankhula Village along the Dedza-Lilongwe stretch of the M1 road.<\/p>\n

The Higer bus, belonging to Malawi Posts Corporation and driven by Mike Ndeule, was coming from the direction of Dedza heading to Lilongwe before colliding with the minibus which was coming in the opposite direction.<\/p>\n

Following the impact, the driver of the minibus, Samson Kasinja and four female passengers sustained multiple fractures and were pronounced dead on arrival at Dedza District Hospital. The conductor of the minibus and two other passengers sustained minor injuries and were treated as out-patients.<\/p>\n

Ndeule escaped with bruises on his face. According to Dedza District Hospital spokesperson, Mwai Liabunya, as of 5pm Friday, the hospital had recorded five deaths.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can confirm of five deaths and the remains are being kept here at the hospital waiting for their relatives. We have also recorded five cases with minor injuries who have been treated at the hospital as out patients,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Dedza Police Station Deputy Public Relations Officer, Cassim Manda, said they are still trying to establish the particulars of the victims. He however could not say the exact cause of the accident, saying investigations are yet to be concluded.<\/p>\n

Malawi Posts Corporation Public Relations Officer Ida Nkolimbo confirmed that one of their buses was indeed involved in the accident. \u201cThe accident involved Post Coach registration number BW 7909 travelling from Blantyre to Lilongwe. Details are that a minibus was heading towards Mangochi and was trying to overtake on a bend which ended up hitting the bus,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She added that all the passengers aboard the bus were not affected. Over the years, road accidents have cost a lot of lives. Statistics show that by November last year, 616 people had died in road accidents in the first quarter of that year, up from 281 in 2019 and 234 in 2018 during the same period.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
