Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>Social justice organisation, Action- Aid Malawi has asked the government to strengthen its taxation systems and make them robust to improve amenities such education in the country.<\/p>\n

According to the organisation, they constantly engage ministries of Education and Finance to promote progressive taxation for enhanced generation and prudent use of finances to provide quality effective education.<\/p>\n

This was disclosed by the organisation\u2019s Executive Director Pamela Kuwali on Wednesday, when the organisation handed over a K25 million girls hostel at Bolero Secondary School in Rumphi District.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur cutting edge in these programmes is to provide services and showcase effective models to government for sustainability of gender responsive public education. This is why we engage with government through the ministries of education and finance to promote progressive taxation for enhanced generation and prudent use of finances to provide quality effective education.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is why we call upon government to strengthen taxation systems, so they are robust and effective for delivery of services through particularly ending harmful incentives and agreements that deny the country from getting more from multinational companies. We also urge government to tighten laws to eliminate corruption and abuse of resources that hamper delivery of quality education services,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Commenting on the donation Acting Division Education Manager for the Northern Education Division, Jennings Kaira said before the hostel was built, most of the girls were exposed to so many risks on their way to and from school which ranged from sexual harassment, teenage pregnancies, forced marriages, school absenteeism and school dropout.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis hostel will address the issue of long distances girls take when coming to school. They will now have a secure and conducive environment for boarding. No wonder that our learners occupied the hostel before this handover ceremony due to mounting pressure for the boarding facilities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Tiyamike Mtaya a form three student at Bolero Secondary School said the 72 bed capacity hostel would help them concentrate more on school work. \u201cWe are optimistic that this will improve our performance in class. We face a lot of challenges when going and coming back from school but also when we are commuting from home, we fail to concentrate on school work because of household chores,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

This year alone ActionAid says has invested K1.2 billion in the education sector through various projects and activities such as construction of school blocs and hostels in eight districts of the country.<\/p>\n
