Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>A group of concerned nurses and midwives in the country has penned President Lazarus Chakwera\u2019s Tonse government over unemployment issues. In a letter addressed to the Ministry of Health through National Organization for Nurses and Midwives of Malawi (NONM), the unemployed nurses and midwives who are from seven cohorts of 2015-2021 say they have been holding patience for so long thinking that the government will bail them out from unemployment knot.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt pleased National Organization for Nurses and Midwives of Malawi (NONM) to lobby employment opportunity abroad when the government seemed failing to employ us but we learnt with shock that the Ministry of Labour denied the move.<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving failed to keep observing patience, thus we have decided to write this letter to inform you regarding our concerns for possible and permanent solutions,\u201d reads the letter in part.<\/p>\n

Among other things, the nurses also want explanations from the government on why the Ministry of Labour denied the move of sending them abroad when the same government has no soonest intention to employ them amid economic crisis and why the walk-in interviews they did in February this year have not been released to date.<\/p>\n

The nurses have further requested the Health Ministry to engage with NONM for possible review of their licences\u2019 fee as it is painful for a nurse or a midwife who is not employed to pay the annual license fee in fear of his\/her license get revoked.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur worry is how hard it is to source funds with this unemployment. We feel this provision worked long time ago when Nurses were being employed soon after completion of their studies hence a need to amend this Act,\u201d the letter further reads.<\/p>\n

It adds,\u201dWe feel that we should remind you that Locum and upkeep allowances are the ones making hospitals seemingly have human resources that are giving you confidence not to recruit us.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis should not be a substitution because if we choose to do opposite, we are of the gap we may create.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the nurses have given the government five days to respond and address their concerns on high priority warning that failure to do so will force them to take a next step not good one for the county\u2019s reputation. According to NONM, currently, more than 3,000 trained nurses in Malawi are unemployed.<\/p>\n
