Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>The Malawi Police Inspector Alfred Chimthere continues flying Malawian flag high in international individual chess tournaments. He earned Fide Master title in the 44th World Chess Olympiad in India following his draw against Zambian highly rated player Timothy Kabwe (2248) in round 10 of the Olympiad.<\/p>\n

Chimthere who needed a minimum score of 6 points in nine games to earn the Fide Master title and he did just that after sharing the spoils with Kabwe on board four.<\/p>\n

He has done it again at this year\u2019s SARPCCO games taking place in Dar es Salaam Tanzania as he has completed a podium finish with a bronze medal. Out of the 9 rounds played including 35 players, Chemthere won 6,drew 2 and lost once to the eventual winner, International Master (IM) Gillan Bwalya of Zambia.<\/p>\n

Overall the men\u2019s team for Malawi Police Service is four,having tied with Mozambique but lost on tie-break (goal aggregate). He was very happy for the medal saying he played against tough opponents like Gillan (first) Zambian and Mushore (Fourth) Zimbabwean who are champions in their respective countries.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe field was very strong and I am very proud of this achievement, it will give me momentum as I go to play at the African Individual Chess Championship in Lagos, Nigeria starting 18 September to 30.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am working on improving my chess rating on the international stage and also I would want to impart the Chess knowledge to the youths. This exposure will push me to achieve this goal\u201d, Chimthere said.<\/p>\n

Gold and Silver for the men\u2019s team event has gone to Zambia and Zimbabwe respectively. However, Malawi Police ladies team has a podium finish also with a Silver medal.<\/p>\n
