Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>The Youth Decide Campaign has dared President Lazarus Chakwera\u2019s Tonse government to fulfil promises made to young people in the country. Campaign Team leader Charles Kajoloweka told the news conference on Thursday, September 15, 2022 in the capital Lilongwe that young people are still waiting promises Chakwera made including access to loans, job opportunities, conducive policies that advances business opportunities.<\/p>\n

Kajoloweka was speaking a head of young people conference slated for September 21-22, 2022 in the capital Lilongwe. He disclosed that the conference aims at taking stock of Chakwera\u2019s Tonse government performance in delivering on the Youth Manifesto.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Chakwera and his Vice Saulos Chilima signed Youth Manifesto in 2019 that later revised during 2020 presidential elections. Eventually they won election.<\/p>\n

\u201cYoung people to take stock on what they promised to them. We want our leaders be responsible enough to the needs of young people. Young people are currently grappling with unemployment.<\/p>\n

The national youth conference comes amid high unemployment levels among young people, unable to access state funds loans for business ventures. The conferences comes following Chakwera\u2019s appointment of retired family and friends into public offices despite many young people in abject poverty and unemployed.<\/p>\n

According to the concept paper, Youth and Society (YAS) in partnership with the Youth-Decide Campaign, a consortium of 65 youth-serving civil society organisations in Malawi, will host the 2022 National Youth Conference on the state of governance and youth development.<\/p>\n

The Conference is expected to bring together youth NGOs, youth activists, government officials, NGOs, development partners , academia, private sector, and regional and international bodies to take stock of<\/p>\n

the ground-breaking gains, opportunities and challenges faced by young people in Malawi in the face of rising economic marginalisation and distrust in governance institutions.<\/p>\n

The conference is under them, \u201cDeepening Youth Engagement and Political Accountability in the Face of Rising Economic Marginalisation and Distrust in Governance Institutions\u2019 reflects the urgent need for a solution-focused national dialogue in addressing the difficult economic and governance realities facing Malawi today.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

Critically, in May 2019, Malawians went to the polls to elect the President, Members of Parliament, and local government councillors, otherwise popularly known as the tripartite election. According to the Malawi Electoral Commission, 54% of the 6.8 million registered voters were youths aged between 18 and 35.<\/p>\n

In order to unearth key development policy issues affecting the youth and make them a priority for political actors in the 2019 \u2013 2024 electoral cycle, a coalition of civil society organisations dubbed the Youth \u2013 Decide Campaign developed the first ever \u201cNational Youth Manifesto\u201d<\/b> for Malawi.<\/p>\n

This 5-year Manifesto is a consolidated statement of the governance and development aspirations and policy demands of young people in Malawi. Through the Manifesto, the youths are not only confronting and tackling difficult questions about Malawi\u2019s democracy, governance and development, but also fostering dialogue with political actors and policymakers on various policy and programmatic domains that address socio\u2013economic challenges<\/p>\n

facing the country including but not limited to education; health; youth employment and vocational training; environment and climate change; mining and energy; sports, culture and arts; youth living with disabilities; youth leadership in politics and civic life; business entrepreneurship; ICT and infrastructure development; water and sanitation; and corruption.<\/p>\n
