Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>President Lazarus Chakwera says Malawi\u2019s economy can pick up if people\u2019s focus changes from consumption to productivity. He said this after attending a church service at St Andrews Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) in Mzuzu City Sunday.<\/p>\n

The President said, for the country to meet its goals, churches had to stand with the government, especially now that the country is facing socio-economic challenges.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the church\u2019s finest hour, the country\u2019s finest hour, despite the fact that it is an hour which is the most difficult as we are facing the most difficult situations; economical and political. But that is when we need God\u2019s interventions to come in.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is when we all need our antennas of hope to come out; that is when production, production and more production is needed, as per the encouragement this morning, because we cannot afford to be consumers forever without producing as country because this is what has brought our country to its knees,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Livingstonia Synod General Secretary Reverend William Tembo concurred with Chakwera. He, however, asked the government to use every opportunity to feed millions of people that will face hunger this year.<\/p>\n

At least 3.8 million people are expected to be food insecure this year; hunger that has been exacerbated by tropical storms Ana and Gombe that hit the country in the 2021-22 farming season. Tembo also asked the government to iron out all issues surrounding this year\u2019s Affordable Inputs Programme (AIP).<\/p>\n

\u201cThe good thing is that Malawians are hard workers; that is to say, if we have good rains and fertiliser is available, productivity would be high. Now, as the farming season is approaching, we want to ask the government to make sure the AIP inputs are available and that they are given to the rightful beneficiaries,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The church service was led by CCAP Synod of Livingstonia Moderator, Reverend Reuben Msowoya, who focused on uplifting people away from poverty. Chakwera has been in the Northern Region since Thursday, when he toured public project sites in Nkhata Bay and Mzuzu City, among other places.<\/p>\n
