Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>Lilongwe First Grade Magistrate\u2019s Court on Friday, October 21,2022 sentenced two men to three years in prison each for ransacking a butchery shop during the unauthorized July 20, 2022 demonstrations, which were organized by the Human Rights Ambassadors (HRA).<\/p>\n

The two, Hassan Anold, aged 21 and Justin Kabango, 20, were found guilty on Friday October 20,2022 of breaking into a building and committing a felony therein.<\/p>\n

State Prosecutor Sergeant Obedi Kagwa told the court that the pair broke into a butchery shop in Area 36 and went away with two deep freezers and a meat cutting machine, all valued at over MK3 million.<\/p>\n

When they appeared in court, the duo pleaded not guilty and the State paraded four witnesses to prove its case. The State asked the court to hand out a stiffer punishment to the accused saying the fridges were not recovered and it was a huge loss to the victim.<\/p>\n

Passing his sentence, First Grade Magistrate Chakaka Nyirenda said what the two did was not only barbaric but also retrogressive in nature hence the need to deal them a harsh sentence.<\/p>\n

Nyirenda went on convicting and sentencing the two convicts each to three years imprisonment with hard labour to deter would-be criminals. Anold comes from Mapando Village Traditional Authority (T\/A) Nankumba in Mangochi while Kabango hails from Lasani Village (T\/A) Kachere in Dedza.<\/p>\n
