Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>Australian mining company Lotus Resources says it has found high-grade rare earth minerals at Milenje Hills in Karonga. This follows second stage of preliminary exploration work at the Milenje Project in Malawi. The second stage of work at Milenje focused on trench sampling, accompanied by a reverse circulation (RC) drilling program and preliminary mineralogy studies.<\/p>\n

The exploration program has found high levels of critical rare earth minerals, including dysprosium, europium, neodymium, praseodymium, terbium and yttrium.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeveral of the samples from this new program returned TREO (total rare earth oxides) grades greater than 15%. The mineralogy work (petrographic and scanning electron microscopy) showed that the rare earths were contained in the mineral allanite.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe 15-hole RC drill program showed that while drilling did encounter some anomalous zones, the REE grades were lower than expected.<\/p>\n

\u201cFollowing a review of the program, we believe the structures are more complex than originally anticipated, however, the program has provided valuable information on lithologies and structures that can be used to better understand what is controlling the mineralisation,\u201d said Lotus Resources managing director Keith Bowes.<\/p>\n

He added that an additional low-cost program will be carried out at Milenje in 2023 to validate the updated structural information from which a decision on a future drilling program can be made.<\/p>\n

In Malawi, Lotus Resources Limited also owns more than 60 percent interest in the Kayelekera Uranium Project in Malawi, which hosts a current resource of 37.5 million pounds of uranium oxide.<\/p>\n
