Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>President Lazarus Chakwera has lobbied on behalf of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) for more financing towards climate smart initiatives that will protect the environment and improve food security for communities.<\/p>\n

Chakwera made the call today when he attended two high-level meetings; World Leaders\u2019 Roundtable on Food Security and Summit on \u201cAdvancing Adaptation in the Least Developed Countries: Twenty Years of Support\u201d following the opening ceremony of the Conference of Parties 27 (COP27).<\/p>\n

In both fora, Chakwera said he reiterated concerns on how Malawi and the rest of LDCs continue to carry the weight of carbon emissions from biggest polluters elsewhere by way of climate-induced disasters such as Cyclones Gombe and Tropical Storm Ana.<\/p>\n

\u201cDespite our marginal contribution to global warming, we continue to bear the brunt of worsening climate change impacts, with 10% of our economic losses being occasioned by disasters.<\/p>\n

\u201cI therefore lobbied, on behalf of all LDCs, for more financing towards climate smart initiatives that will protect the environment and improve food security for our communities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

At the event commemorating the 20 years\u2019 contribution of the LDC expert group, under the United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNFCC), Chakwera applauded the commemoration of the 20 years in which LDCs have made a significant contribution to the global climate change adaptation agenda, as well as the Doha Programme of Action.<\/p>\n

He encouraged world leaders to leverage COP27 in order to make further strides before the next UN Conference for LDCs scheduled to take place in Doha in 2023. Chakwera travelled to Sharm El- Sheikh in Egypt on Saturday and he will return to Malawi this weekend.<\/p>\n
