Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>Former president Peter Mutharika says he is making consultations as to whether he can stand again in the 2025 presidential elections as some people in the party are asking him to.<\/p>\n

Mutharika made the remarks in an interview after addressing a political rally at St Augustine Primary school ground in Mangochi yesterday. \u201cThere are some calls from chiefs, DPP officials, faith leaders and some non[1]DPP members who feel that I am the best candidate to represent the party in 2025.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut running a presidential campaign is hectic; that is why I am consulting if I am the best candidate or there is somebody better than me who can represent the party and win the elections,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The former president repeated his calls for a referendum to allow Malawians to decide whether they want to continue with the current administration or not. He said he was optimistic that once the referendum is done, Malawians would not want to continue with this government.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet them step down and I take over from where we left. I will change the economy of the country within six months of my leadership. This government is clueless and it cannot last until 2025,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Mutharika also accused the Lazarus Chakwera administration of nepotism which he described as worse than before. He said during his tenure of office, he appointed people from all regions and tribes in key positions.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut this government has employed people from one tribe, region and church. Even business opportunities are being given to their people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He said his government would have achieved its desire of turning Mangochi into a huge resort city. He also said his government managed to improve the economy without the support of major donors for some time.<\/p>\n

On internal politics within the party, Mutharika said his party is united as opposed to some thoughts that the party is split. \u201cHaving different views on policy direction in a party or any organisation is healthy. We are DPP and we are united,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

DPP vice president for the South Kondwani Nankhumwa, Joseph Mwanamveka and Bright Msaka were among high profile people who attended the rally. Mutharika\u2019s 2019 running mate Everton Chimulirenji was also in attendance.<\/p>\n
