Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>Governance and political commentators have condemned the opposition Democractic Progressive Party (DPP) for making changes to the party constitution which includes abolition of vice presidents and barring some aspiring candidates.<\/p>\n

A governance expert George Phiri has warned the party to tread carefully with the implementation of the proposed changes. The DPP revised its constitution to abolish regional vice-presidents, blocked new members from contesting for positions and barred former members, who dumped it, from returning, Nation on Sunday has gathered.<\/p>\n

While praising the abolition of regional vice-presidents, analysts have condemned the party for the other reforms which they say they infringe on the right to association prescribed in the country\u2019s Constitution. Phiri says the party should ensure the decisions being made represent majority view and not just a few people.<\/p>\n

He argued the party which is entangled in infighting should have first dealt with differences before coming up with the changes which he feels some have been made to deal with certain individuals holding positions in the party.<\/p>\n

DPP spokesperson Shadreck Namalomba while confirming the proposal to abolish the position of regional vice president said the party is yet to make a final position on the proposed changes as the party\u2019s central executive committee and the national governing council are yet to meet to discuss the proposed changes.<\/p>\n

Some analysts say the party has abolished the positions of vice presidents to weaken Kondwani Nankhumwa, party vice president for the south who is a threat to party president Peter Mutharika\u2019s anointed party presidential candidate.<\/p>\n
