Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>Japanese Ambassador to Malawi Yoichi Oya has reaffirmed his government\u2019s commitment to help Malawi meet its development goals. He said this in Lilongwe on Thursday during birthday celebrations for Emperor Naruhito of Japan, who turned 63 on February 23.<\/p>\n

Naruhito is the 126th monarch of Japan and acceded to the throne on May 1 2019. Speaking at the event, Yoichi lauded Japan- Malawi relations. Next year, Malawi will have been in a diplomatic relationship with the Asian country for 60 years.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe two countries have enjoyed many strides in development cooperation. Japan\u2019s economic support is mainly grant-based and, on average, stands at $30 million per year,\u201d Yoichi said.<\/p>\n

He cited the rehabilitation of Kanengo and Old Town electricity substations, an upgrade of Domasi College of Education and rehabilitation of Old Town Bridge in Lilongwe as some of the projects being implemented by Japan.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Japanese government will also continue supporting Malawi in the sectors of agriculture, education and health,\u201d he said. Foreign Affairs Minister Nancy Tembo hailed Japan for the support it offers to Malawi.<\/p>\n

\u201cJapan has assisted us in various areas, be it agriculture, health, road infrastructure and education. As we speak, they are upgrading Domasi College of Education but are also assisting us with [construction of] the bridge in the old town [Lilongwe],\u201d Tembo said.<\/p>\n
