We are all leaders in one way or another. In other ways, we have leaders at various levels of sectors including family, church, departments, organizations, community and a country at large.

Fortunately, such leadership skills are transferrable, a trait that is deficient in the incumbent leadership of this country. Having steered the Assemblies of God church for over 25 years, Malawians expected Dr. Lazarus Chakwera to exude strong and decisive leadership. Disappointingly, the contrary is what is happening now.

Two examples of ineptitude exhibited by the incumbent president can suffice. It smacks of very poor leadership by Dr. Lazarus Chakwera to abuse his prerogative of appointing cabinet ministers by lying to Malawians that he would institute a cabinet reshuffle within six months. He failed to fulfil this promise as it took him a year just to transpose a few cabinet portfolios.

A few weeks ago, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, publicly announced that he stopped delegating duties to Dr. Saulos Chilima following the allegations that he benefitted from corrupt deals with Sattar.

Malawians are wondering why President Chakwera has made a U-turn to start delegating his vice president without even publicly informing Malawians again of that abrupt change.

As you are reading this statement, Vice President Chilima was delegated to take charge of this country while President Chakwera is away performing other official duties. Of course, the Constitution empowers the sitting president to delegate any duties to any person out of his discretion. The president is not obligated to delegate duties to the Vice President.

This is why it was not unconstitutional when former presidents such as Bingu wa Muthariika, Joyce Banda and Prof. Peter Mutharika stopped giving delegated duties to their vice presidents. Malawi still needs a strong and decisive leader. The gist of this write-up is to unearth the pragmatic realism involving effective leadership, influence , power and authority.

These are the traits that seem to be lacking in our president. In a nut shell, leadership is the process whereby the leader influences the behaviour of his subordinates in such a manner that they will subsequently strive to achieve the objectives he presents them with.

Unfortunately, President Chakwera behaves as if he is a puppet and a follower because he is paradoxically influenced by his own subordinates. This is laughable to say the least.

The traits theory of leadership can be best elucidated by presenting the following adage: ‘a group of sheep led by a lion can easily defeat a group of lions led by a sheep’. This means that leadership plays a crucial role in transforming the country or organization.

For instance, through strong leadership of Paul Kagame of Rwanda, John Magufuli of Tanzania and Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia, such countries have registered tremendous economic growth amid COVID 19 pandemic and Russia-Ukraine war. We therefore wonder why President Chakwera cannot borrow a leaf from such gurus.

Amid the dismal leadership performance of the incumbent president Chakwera, it is therefore not surprising that he can’t resign. We all know that he promised Malawians that he would resign if he failed to deliver his campaign promises within two years.

This can’t happen because ‘mbuzi ikalawa mchere sikusika’. Instead, we only hope that the President should endeavour to exude leadership skills by fulfilling his promises as we look forward to 2025 general elections.

During the run up to 2019 general elections, I outlined traits of a good leader who can competently transform our country. Today, I just want to fulfil the same duty of reminding Malawians on the traits of a great leader.

Malawians in 2025 need to elect a leader who strives for excellence. Such a leader should stimulate a climate and environment that is conducive to maximal performance and must inspire others to achieve a high level of excellence. According to Karl Marx, eloquent leaders usually succeed in inspiring subordinates to take appropriate action. Also that leaders need to walk the talk as action speaks louder than words.

We need leaders of high integrity. Hypocrites and liars like Pastor Chakwera must stay away from the mantle of leadership. Corruption is high now as it is being tolerated and shielded by liars and dishonest people who were voted into power out of nescience. In fact, integrity creates public trust.

Malawi is still grappling to find a leader who is decisive, one whom people can trust that his yes means yes and his decision will be carried out. Such a leader must have acumen to determine what and who to delegate at an appropriate time. He must be a practical dreamer at the same time a realistic optimist.

We also aspire to have a leader who has an empathetic understanding and knowledge of human nature, man’s motives, ambitions, strengths and weaknesses. Good leaders put the plight of the poor, the disadvantaged and the underprivileged at heart.

Running government is a serious business. A leader must possess necessary sound intellect and experience to enable him run government effectively. Government is not an experiment lab where try and error techniques are employed. Decisions and policies made by the government immediately affect all people in the country.

The problem with the current regime is that it is doing business as usual. It has adopted the same corrupt system. It is using the GIGO ( Garbage in Garbage out) algorithm. Without visionary leadership, Malawi will not be progressively transformed. In fact, vision inspires imagination, foresees problems, and results in facing them with initiative.

In 2025, Malawians need to elect a leader who is poised to adapt to the dynamic and unforeseeable events. We don’t need a leader who is sitting phwii blaming the natural disasters, COVID 19 pandemic and Russia-Ukraine war for the global economic recess without providing solutions. Flexibility and adaptability result in unbiased assessment, admission of mistakes and ability to act proactively.

Malawi will only prosper if we elect leaders of strong will-power and purposefulness. Such will-power will uplift the impoverished citizens from doldrums of utter hopelessness and despair. We need a leader who can forgo the egocentricity with the purpose of stamping out poverty and the cancerous corruption.

A great leader should display great moral courage and pluck. It is the courage and brevity that will compel a good leader to discipline his own appointee.

It is the audacity of the leader that will prompt him to serve all Malawians without being chocked by party politics for all citizens are equal before the law regardless of race, creed, political affiliation and tribe.

Good leaders believe in themselves as they exude a sense of self-confidence. They are not swayed by mediocrity and pressure. When they make a decision, they defend it with a good cause.

They convey such a cause with enthusiasm clearly, forcibly and effectively with a view to inspire. Such great leaders become a source of inspiration and as such the subordinates readily accept responsibility for the betterment of the country.

Usually, citizens become inspired by the sound mind, good judgement and thorough knowledge of their trusted leader. Lastly but not least, great leaders are unselfish as they possess a spirit of service. They are simply servant leaders.

According to Mark 5 verse 35, “if someone wants to be first, he must be the last of everyone and everyone’s servant”. Servant leadership should not be a lip service but action-oriented.

Much as there is no perfect leader, my fellow Malawians, in 2025, let us choose leaders who are honest, mentally and physically healthy, dedicated to a cause, unselfish, enthusiastic, intelligent, knowledgeable, self-confident, humble, eloquent, proactive and purposeful, adaptable and flexible, creative and visionary, empathetic, trustworthy, and decisive. Your vote is very important because ‘mbuzi ikalawa mchere sikusika’. So choose right leaders for the next five terms as ‘a group of sheep led by a lion can easily defeat a group of lions led by a sheep’. Love your country.

For More News And Analysis About Malawi Follow Africa-Press

Africa-Press – Malawi.
