Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>The Ministry of Finance has released K1.6 billion to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma) to be used for assisting Cyclone Freddy survivors, Finance Minister Sosten Gwengwe has disclosed.<\/p>\n

Gwengwe also said that he would be appealing to lawmakers to consider channeling more resources to survivors in the 2023-24 national budget, currently under the cluster stage.<\/p>\n

The cyclone has caused untold suffering in 10 Southern Region districts, claiming the lives of over 100 Malawians and displacing thousands of people. Gwengwe told The Daily Times Tuesday that the needs of affected people are huge.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet the private sector, donors, all institutions of goodwill step forward and respond to President Lazarus Chakwera\u2019s declaration of a state of disaster in the 10 districts,\u201d Gwengwe said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) has said it has learned with shock about the devastating effects of Cyclone Freddy, where hundreds of lives and property have been lost.<\/p>\n

In a statement signed by Catholic bishops on Tuesday, ECM has commended Chakwera for declaring a state of disaster in affected districts. ECM has also joined Malawians in praying for the families that have been directly or indirectly affected by the cyclone. ECM has since appealed to all people, especially those in flood and disaster-prone areas, to move to safer grounds.<\/p>\n
